Is it possible to treat baldness?

There are various forms of baldness: from simple hair loss, to baldness, to alopecia. Depending on the causes of hair loss and the stage of progress, this condition can be more or less easily treated, and the methods and solutions used will differ:

  • Telogen effluvium: this form of baldness is generally temporary. However, it is essential to detect and eliminate the causes of this type of baldness in order to treat it permanently
  • traction alopecia: simply eliminate the traction on the hair
  • chemotherapy or anagen effluvium: this form of hair loss is temporary. Therefore, the hair will grow back after the treatment is over. However, it is likely that the hair will differ somewhat after regrowth
  • Seasonal hair loss: there is no need to worry in this case. You just have to wait for spring to see your hair grow again
  • alopecia: medication is the most appropriate (corticosteroids, minoxidil, etc.)
  • scarring alopecia: treatment (long-acting tetracyline combined with a powerful corticosteroid)
  • trichotillomania: behavioral therapy
  • ringworm: treatment with oral antifungals

What are the ways to treat baldness?

As seen previously, there are several ways to treat baldness. Discover now the most common and effective methods to get rid of baldness!

1 – The natural remedies

natural care for baldness

When looking for natural solutions to cure baldness, one can often find recipes for natural remedies based on :

  • brewer’s yeast
  • green tea
  • wheat germ
  • castor oil
  • vitamins and minerals
  • millet
  • cedar essential oil

And the list goes on…

Many of these natural products are known to be beneficial to the hair (stimulation of growth, strengthening, etc.) and completely harmless to your health. This makes them very attractive to people in hair distress. However, these products are totally ineffective in overcoming androgenetic alopecia, which is the primary cause of baldness in men and women.

2 – Low-level laser light therapy

Photobiostimulation is a solution that promotes hair growth (from 10 to 50% depending on the case). LED lights are placed in a helmet that covers the patient’s head. A minimum of 6 sessions is required to obtain results.

The results are an increase in the number of hairs and a device that is not harmful to your health. It is therefore a random but safe solution to cure baldness.

3 – Injections to treat baldness

The treatment of hair loss with injections revitalizes the hair roots and slows down the hair loss process. It is a good alternative for treating baldness.

PRP injections: Platelet Rich Plasma

Autologous platelet-rich plasma contains growth factors. This treatment is biocompatible and natural. Depending on the patient, results can be seen from the first to the fourth session. However, hair density increases progressively over the following months.

Hair mesotherapy

This injection method aims to nourish the hair bulb with vitamins and hyaluronic acid. This treatment revitalizes and regenerates the hair ecosystem without pain. After two months of treatment, patients notice a slowing of hair loss and sometimes even an increase in hair diameter.

Microneedling

The microneedling technique consists of having a doctor make micro-perforations in the hair epidermis. This has the effect of boosting blood circulation and increasing the production of collagen and elastin in the scalp.

4 – Medication

Drug treatments are the most common and widely used to treat baldness. Although the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) has validated the two main drugs used to fight baldness (minoxidil and finasteride), it has warned about the dangerous side effects to which they are exposed.

Minoxil

Hair lotion to be applied locally on bald areas in order to dilate the vessels and thus stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss. Apply 2x/day for 4 to 6 months to see results. This treatment can cause skin dryness or even local irritation, a drop in blood pressure, eczema and itching.

Finasteride: the most prescribed medication to treat baldness

Oral tablets to stop the enzyme responsible for the transformation of testosterone into DHT. As a result, hair loss is slowed down, but no regrowth mechanism is triggered. Consequently, this treatment only serves to stabilize hair loss during its use (over a few years or even for life). Moreover, it is important to know that the side effects of this treatment are quite important on the sexual and moral level: erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, breast swelling, mental fog, suicidal thoughts, etc.

Oral contraceptives or spironolactone

These treatments are used to treat baldness in women.

In order to see results with medication treatments, it is important that your baldness does not progress beyond stage 5 on the Ludwig scale.

Be careful! Before starting any form of medication, it is essential to consult a specialized doctor who will conduct a series of tests to identify the causes and form of your hair loss. He or she will then be able to prescribe the most appropriate treatment to cure your baldness.

5 – Surgery to permanently cure baldness

Hair transplants are an increasingly used solution because this reconstructive surgery offers solutions without major surgery for the patient. According to the ISHRS: International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, from 2016 to 2019 hair transplantation increased by 16%! Thus 735,312 hair restoration procedures took place in 2019.

There are various surgical methods of hair transplantation.

The FUT graft

This is an old procedure, also called strip harvesting. This technique consists of removing hair from the donor area (occiput) by strip, then re-implanting it in follicular units on the bald areas. The FUT transplant is particularly suitable for people with a hair density too low for the FUE transplant.

FUT

The FUE micrograft

This form of reconstructive surgery differs from the previous one because the method of removal is not by strip. In fact, the hair is removed at the root, one by one, and then inserted in the areas where there is no more hair.

FUE
The ARTAS robotic hair transplant

The robotic hair transplant follows the same method as the FUE micrograft. However, a robot named ARTAS performs the operation under the supervision of the doctor. The robot selects the grafts to be implanted with great precision according to their quality and location for an even more natural result. This invention is a true technological innovation and is an extremely effective solution.

The DHI micrograft

This technique allows a survival of 90% of the implanted hair, which is enormous! The hair bulbs are removed with great precision, as the tools used are no larger than a needle. Thus, the patient can undergo this form of transplantation without feeling pain or having scars. As a result, the result is very natural, imperceptible and long-lasting!
